A DOCUMENTARY FILM

The idea is to create a documentary movie about a one-month expedition of two friends in a high mountain shelter during winter in the heart of the French Pyrenees.

This adventure will take place between February and March 2020 and the only means of transport that will be used  will be splitboarding and ski touring.

With the « Pyrenean Backcountry project » we intend to participate in these awareness-raising efforts towards communities on both a grassroots and international level because according to the experts and scientists, the Pyrenean case is by no means isolated.

That is why this documentary movie will be interspersed with interviews conducted with various key actors in the Pyrenees in order to showcase the richness of the French Pyrenees as well as raise awareness of its ecological vulnerability.

An ecological dimension

The mountains as we know them today are already different than what they use to be 20 or 50 years ago. The Pyrenees, as well as all other mountains ranges of the world, are facing rising threats from human activities.

The 2008 report on climate change published by the Pyrenees Climate Change Observatory (OPCC) outlined an alarming overall assessment with irreversible changes throughout the Pyrenean territory.

The Pyrenean’s average temperature has increased by 30% more (1.2°C) than the world average in the last 50 years. Moreover, half the glaciers have disappeared in the last 35 years alone. The report highlights and emphasises the necessity to raise public awareness and implement prevention and adjustment policies in all 3 countries at risk: France, Andorra and Spain.
